What is HD

How does it work?
The HD frames are recorded at 24 frames per second. One of the main reasons that films look so different is that movies are shot at a different rate. The images are then loaded into a special computer and edited into a finished product. However, when it's ready to go to television, the missing frames need to be reinserted because the US system won't play that frame rate. It's all very complex and requires a technical expert to pull it off. We have the technicians and the equipment to handle the job.

The current standard for High Definition in the United States and the rest of the world is a frame size of 1920 pixels wide by 1080 pixels (lines) high. Hence the term 1080. Movies are captures in progressive (P) frames and television is recorded and displayed in interlaced (i) frames, hence the terms 1080i or 1080p. Our standard def signal is 525 lines of vertical scan lines. The HD frame is 6 times as large as the SD frame. Because of this, the signal needs to carry 6 times the information as SD. Complicated? It sure is. We have had HD for around 25 years but it was analog at first and there was no way to transmit analog HD. It wasn't till the conversion the digital imaging that HDTV became affordable and transmittable. The HD standard for DVDs is Sony's Blu-Ray technology. For feature film work, 24 frame High Definition was the brainchild of George Lucas. In 1999, Mr. Lucas convinced the engineers at Sony to build a High Def video camera that would shoot at the same frame rate as a typical film camera, instead of 30 frames, which is the frame rate for the US television system. |
